Have a Green Halloween

I don't know about you, but I'm one of those kids who plans on trick-or-treating until the day I have kids of my own. Okay, perhaps it won’t be that long, but still, I’m going out again this year. I have my costume picked out and everything. So in honor of the festivities that will be happening tomorrow, I thought I would give you some ways to be both eco-safe and eco-sexy this Halloween.

No Plastic Bags!

Instead of grabbing a plastic bag that you used to bring home the groceries, collect your candy in a pillowcase instead. Besides being eco-friendly, they're larger and much more durable.

Homemade Costumes

No need to waste money on a costume that you’ll wear once and then throw away. Get creative and either:

a) Buy a costume that can be easily reused

Example: Wings can be used for number different outfits—butterfly, angel, pixie, sugarplum/princess/seasonal/ fairy, etc.

b) Make a costume out of items you already have

Example: It only takes a few minutes to turn a plain white bedsheet into a toga which opens up all sorts of options—Statue of Liberty, god/goddess, ancient Greek or Roman, etc.

Not only is this less expensive, but it can also be a lot of fun!

You're only as Cool as Your Carpool

If you and your friends decide to go trick-or-treating somewhere other than your regular ‘hood, ride together instead of each driving yourselves there separately. It’s good for the environment and a great way to save on gas.

Pumpkin ‘Posting
Don't toss your pumpkins in the garbage on November 1st, compost them!

Here’s a site that show you how: Smashing Pumpkins: How to Compost

Whether you go door to door or stay in, remember to go green this Halloween.

Save the planet. It’ll thank you later :)

Hi Shannon,

Great Column for Halloween. We had such a sugar hangover. Never again. We need to recycle the candy next time instead of eating it.
