A birthday is a happy day, right? At least, for us kids it is. And Ellen’s birthday seems at first to be pretty happy. She wakes up on her tenth birthday to find a silver crown on her pillow, and goes for a morning walk to start off her day. However, when she returns, she finds her house has burned down within seconds, and her family is nowhere to be found.When her hopes of getting local help are dashed, she is forced to hitch hike to her aunt’s house in Kentucky. After being chased by her ride, Mr. Gates, she runs into Otto Fitzpatrick, a young boy living with his mother in the woods. Someone is looking for Ellen--and they figure out it must have something to do with the crown.
Ellen and Otto set out through the mountains to get to her aunt, and instead find a mysterious building full of children being taught terrible things-and a crown exactly like Ellen’s, only black.
In The Silver Crown, Robert C. O’Brien makes you feel as though you are there, feeling the pang of hunger when their store of food falls low, feeling the anxious fear when they’re being chased by the mysterious men in black and green.
O’Brien is also the Newbery Medal-winning author of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.
