Hello everyone! :)
Yesterday was the Fourth of July -- happy Independence Day America!
Now that we're into July, more and more of you are shopping for the upcoming fall semester.
Today, I wanted to talk about popularity.
What does it mean to be popular?
Ask any one person and they're bound to give you a different answer.
Some say it's when the whole school knows who you are.
Others would say it's when people want to be like you.
And then there are those who think popularity is overrated anyway so what does it matter what it is....
Personally, I think popularity or being popular is when someone else not only knows you but knows of you. For example, the new kid in school is instantly popular.
How so?
Well depending on the school, it's the new kid. Everyone's looking at him or her. Everyone's talking about him or her. Everyone knows of the new kid, but very few actually have met the new kid.
New kid = popular.
Interesting way of looking at it isn't it?
When viewed that way, popularity isn't really that big of a deal is it?
In some way, everyone is popular.
Some may be more popular than others -- but really, being popular isn't the best thing in the world. Nor should it be your main focus in school.
In the future, it doesn't matter if you're super popular or famous or whatever -- if you don't sincerely love what you do, who you are as a person and the people surrounding you -- you will live an empty life.
In the same way, if you are super popular today but you don't love school as a place to learn ((what a concept right? School = learning! I know!)), love who you are as a person or like the company you keep -- there is no point.
Your best years in life should not be in junior high or high school. There's so much life to live, sights to see, people to meet etc...
Instead of focusing attention on becoming more popular, focus on your grades. Focus on being a better person. Focus on things that will matter 10, 20 years down the road.
No one ever remembers or cares who was the homecoming queen their senior year.
It won't help your resume.
It won't help your social standing in life.
At the end of the day, it's about you as a person: your character, your personality...
That's what matters.
If you've been caught up in the popularity game before, don't worry.
Every breath is a second chance.
Choose for this year to be different.
Make a plan.
Set some goals, academically and personally.
Cherish the summer time and live life to the fullest.
Life's too short to be caught up in silly little games :)
Have a great week everyone!
