books to movies: what to read now!
With the last Harry Potter, movie behind us, and the end of The Twilight Saga on the horizon, you might be feeling a little bit teary. But don't get too upset yet! To make up for the lack of dreamy vampires and awesome wizards, Hollywood is turning tons of other really cool books into big-screen sensations.
December 2011 will bring a major bestseller to life, with the American adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. With James Bond's Daniel Craig starring as disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist, and The Social Network's Rooney Mara as the antisocial genius Lisbeth Salander, this movie is pretty much guaranteed to be a hit. The murder mystery tale is seriously gripping, so prepare yourself for a really intense few hours.
For a less overwhelming alternative, this coming year will also bring us an animated version of the classic children's book, The Lorax. The story about factories destroying the environment is definitely relevant today. And with superstars like Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Betty White, and Willow Smith doing the voices, it's sure to be a whole lot of fun.
And then next year, The Hunger Games comes out! Oscar-nominated actress, Jennifer Lawrence stars as the butt-kicking heroine Katniss. The phenomenal book series, by Suzanne Collins, is often called the new Twilight, but this war story feels entirely original. If any movie is a must-see for the upcoming year, this is the one.
Like The Hunger Games, the new adaptation of Romeo and Juliet also boasts an award-worthy cast. 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld is set to play the epic star-crossed lover, Juliet. After her amazing breakout performance in True Grit, there is no doubt that Steinfeld can make the familiar role feel new. And for a bonus, Gossip Girl and The Vampire Diaries' hotties, Ed Westwick and Paul Wesley, are also in the cast! That's definitely a good reason to see this one.
So, if you're tired of all of your friends talking about the great books that they read, don't worry. This is the year for non-readers to catch up on all of the awesome lit that they have been missing. So readers and non-readers enjoy! It is time for the books to take over Hollywoood.
