Outfit Recycling

Today's all about the best thing to recycle--CLOTHES!

With summer right around the corner, stores put their parkas into storage and whipping on the Bermuda shorts! But instead of spending all your cash on new stuff, go through your closet first. You'll be surprised at how many summer outfits you can re-use again!

Also, when you do decide to purchase, there are tons of stores promoting recycling with eco-friendly projects. For example, Walmart's new OP collection--sassy summer clothes that are eco-friendly too! Check it out at http://www.walmart.com/op.

So do some research before you shop!

And recycle. Your earth needs it :)

Light the way to a GREENer Future

Hey readers!

Did you know that lighting accounts for nearly 20% of the average home's electric bill?

With Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs--more commonly known as CLFs--you can back some of that cost. CLFs last TEN times longer than incandescent lightbulbs, and pay for themselves in a little over six months.

PLUS, they're great for the environment because they uses 75% less energy which reduces the amount of mercury released into the atmosphere. In fact, ENERGY STAR qualified CLF bulbs release no mercury at all when they are in proper use!

So have your parents look into fluorescent bulbs. Save the planet, and your money too!

For more info, go to Energystar.gov

POP!

Hey eco-friends,

Just reminding you to keep recycling!

Today's topic: Soda can pop tops.

Instead of twisting them off and tossing them out, collect those babys. As much soda as teens drink, you can even make it a competition between friends to see who can collect the most. And then, when you've accumulated a decent amount, check in with your local hospital. Many of them have programs where civilians can bring in their collected pop-tops and the hospital will recycle them for you, using the money they recieve to support different charities and causes.

Save your poptops, save your planet, love your Earth :)

Hey Readers

I'm buried under a week and a half's worth of make-up work so I didn't get a chance to come up with anything spectacular for you to read today

BUT

I do have a word of advice: Although make-up word can be utterly tedious and often times unbearable, don't torch these assignments when you get them back (no matter how badly you want to).

Instead: Toss them in the recycling bin!

Save your planet :)

Seventeen

Hey, readers, in case you didn't know, it was my birthday yesterday.

Thanks a million D&P for the CyberCake, btw. It was utterly gorgeous and delicious looking.

Anyway, I turned seventeen, so for my post this week I'm going to show you seven of Earth's most beautiful sights in honor of my seventeen years on this amazing planet.

(Originally I thought I'd show you seventeen but that's such a large number I figured it might seem a bit eccentric.)

Remember to recycle.

Enjoy :)

Birthdays

Hey Readers!

Today's my mom's birthday and I made her the coolest eco-friendly gift, so I just wanted to tell you guys about out.

It was a few gifts actually:

1. A picture frame. Painted by Yours Truly.

2. Flowers. Order from a sight that grows their produce in organic soil.

3. Chocolate Cake. I guess there's nothing particularly "green" about that except the icing. But it's the thought that counts. And it was delicious.

4. A card (on already recycled paper. Nice right?)

And #5--the best one--a reusable workbag that folds up to be the size of an index card.

Plus it was all wrapped in easily-recycled newspaper. I was quite proud of myself this morning when I put it all together.

Okay, that's all I have for you this week.
Remember to recycle!

Spring Cleaning!

With spring right around the corner, I just wanted to remind all of you about some common household items that you might be tempted to throw away when you’re clearing out the clutter, but STOP, you can recycle them instead!

(Just as an FYI—When I say recycle, I don’t just mean sticking it in the blue bin at the curb and forgetting about it. This also includes the reuse or donation of certain items.)

Recyclable Trash:

Old school papers

Empty shoeboxes

Shoes that are too small

Cardboard backs of notebooks

Headphones (make sure to clean the ear-pieces with rubbing alcohol first)

Unwanted books/CD cases/posters

Empty water/shampoo/body spritzer bottles

Clothes that don’t fit

Extra bags (purses and/or backpacks)

Old magazines and calendars

Reading glasses you don't use anymore

If you can think of anymore, add to the list :)

The best kind of paper...

...is RECYCLED PAPER

Stats:
- Paper made from recycled paper uses 70% less energy
- 75% of each tree that is cut down for paper is not used in a paper product
- One ton of paper requires the use of 98 tons of various resources

**Sorry about the short post this week, it's exam cramming time over here. Insanium in the cranium!

That's a Wrap!

Christmas. It’s the most wonderful time of the year. And one of the most wasteful. I’m all for the spirit of giving, it’s the wrapping of the gifts that I have an issue with. Wrapping paper is so crazy wasted in this part of the world. Here are the shocking facts:

- The gift wrap industry now accounts for $2.6 billion annually in retail sales

- As much as half of the 85 million tons of paper products Americans consume every year goes toward packaging, wrapping and decorating goods.

- Additional food waste, shopping bags, packaging, wrapping paper, bows and ribbons - it adds up to an extra 1 million tons a week to our landfills.

- Wrapping paper and shopping bags alone account for about 4 million tons of trash annually in the United States.

- From Thanksgiving to New Years Day, household waste increases by over 25 percent.

Reasons Wrapping Paper Can Be a Wee Bit Difficult to Recycle...
#1 Reason--many of the materials it's made out of are non-recyclable!
Rest of Reasons:
- Wrapping paper is often dyed and laminated.
- It can contain non-paper additives such as gold and silver coloring, glitter and plastics.
- It usually has tape on it from being wrapped around a gift.

Temporary Solution: Wrap with newspaper, recycled paper, or other reused/reusable materials (example: gift bags, etc).

Little known fact: If every American family wrapped three presents in reused materials, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields.

Save wrapping paper. Save your planet. It’ll thank you later :)

Less Talk, More Action

This is what our world looks like...should always look like...
It's stunningly beautiful...

But because of our wasteful tendencies...this is what we could end up living in...

It's time for a change. It's time to GO GREEN.
