Nikki Reed Asks You to Care With New Social Action Platform
A new social action platform, endorsed by Twilight actress Nikki Reed, is encouraging people to “Give A Sh*t” about flooding, famine, domestic violence, gay rights, animal cruelty and other important issues. At Give-A-Shit.org, anyone can pick a cause and show their friends they…err…”give a sh*t.”
The idea behind Give A Sh*t is that we can make change happen by making it a part of our daily lives. They ask that each day, while we are sitting on the toilet, we use their platform to spread the word about an issue that is important to us to inspire change. On their website they elaborate:
“Many of you have seen the films ‘The Secret’ or ‘What The Bleep Do We Know!?’Thanks to a promotional video starring Nikki Reed, the site and the concept is going viral this week.
“Both films use the science of quantum physics to prove something that spiritual leaders like the Dalai Lama have been saying for centuries. The thoughts of individuals can change the world.
“This got us thinking.
“If individuals alone could change the world, what could groups of passionate people do? We became determined to harness the power of mass consciousness. But one thing worried us: in our frenetic, fast-paced existence when would people have the time?
“And then it struck us—everyone has those moments of God-given contemplation while on the toilet. The perfect time for people to give a shit was while taking a shit.”
Give A Sh*t isn’t asking people to donate money. They’re simply asking for people to take the time to let their friends on Facebook and Twitter know what causes they’re passionate about. It’s like no social activism platform we’ve seen before.
Personally, I’m a little bit put off by the whole bathroom concept, though I do think it’s great that they’re doing what they can to help spread the word about important causes. They respond to the question of “Why the bad language?” on their site saying, “Well, we’re not offended by bad language. We’re offended by billions of people dying from lack of clean water. We’re offended by the rainforest being devastated by human greed. We’re offended by famine in Africa. So if we have to talk shit, then that’s what we’ll do.”
