1 in 8 women (12%) will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer at some point in her life. Thankfully, boobs are strong, and we've got the list of celebrities, athletes and more to prove it. Through their life changing actions, here are 11 people who deserve a bust of appreciation during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
- Reese Witherspoon. After hearing the statistic that a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes, the realization of being diagnosed caused her to take action. Deciding to educate others, Reese became the honorary chair of the Avon Foundation, as she continues to spread awareness of the importance of early detection.
- Betty Ford. Speaking about breast cancer publically was completely unheard of in the early ‘90s. In 1974, Betty Ford confronted this stigma and announced her fight against breast cancer. This news was a revelation to the public, who had kept the talk of breast cancer hidden for years. Her bravery inspired women to finally get their mysterious breast bump examined, while also instilling support and hope among women fighting this disease.
- Peggy Fleming. Thirty years after winning an Olympic gold medal for her graceful figure skating, Peggy Fleming was diagnosed with breast cancer. After surgery and undergoing six weeks of radiation, Peggy used her celebrity status to inform people about breast cancer. The figure skater became an advocate for Speak Now, a breast cancer awareness campaign.
- Betsey Johnson. What better way to spread breast cancer awareness than through fashion? Behind Betsey Johnson’s wacky personality and bold clothing designs, you may have been unaware that this designer had breast cancer. Not only is she the spokeswoman for the Cornell Medical Center, but each year she launches a line of products for breast cancer awareness month.
- Peter Criss. Even man-boobs get cancer. After being diagnosed with male breast cancer, founder of the legendary rock band KISS, decided to educate males about the disease. Criss is also advocating a change to treatment and prevention. Mammograms could be uncomfortable for men, after all, they are made for women.
- Christina Applegate. This Up All Night actress has been a cancer survivor for years now, Applegate created the Christina Applegate Foundation. This foundation is centered towards informing woman about the meaning of “High Risk” breast cancer. Her foundation also aids woman who are unable to pay for the screenings they need to become aware of and beat this disease.
- Nancy Reagan. In 1987, the First Lady was diagnosed with breast cancer. Instead of keeping quiet about the ordeal, she became an advocate by giving her name to the Nancy Reagan Breast Cancer Center of Simi Valley Hospital. She lent her guidance and helped form this center.
- Rob Lowe. This guy loves boobs. Rob was inspired to spread awareness after losing his great-grand mother, grandmother and mother to breast cancer. Rob was the first spokesman for the annual Lee National Denim Day Fundraiser, helping to raise $83 million.
- DoSomething user Nisha. She's not famous, but she's a total change-making star. Instead of throwing a typical Halloween themed sweet sixteen party for her October birthday, Nisha decided to raise awareness for breast cancer. Losing her grandmother at a young age, Nisha became an advocate for this illness. At her party, guests were given mammogram screenings, pamphlets, and ribbons. Instead of asking for money, she asked for donations to be given to Sister Network Incorporated, a foundation based on finding a cure for breast cancer.
- Suzanne Somers. After being diagnosed for breast cancer in 2001, the “Three’s Company” actress took a different approach to fighting breast cancer. She went on an organic and natural diet as opposed to chemotherapy. Throughout the years, she has been an advocate for breast cancer through interviews and her book “Knockout”, which is about other breast cancer treatment alternatives.
- Elizabeth Hurley. After losing her grandmother to breast cancer, she has become one of the most active advocates for the fight against breast cancer. A part of the Estée Lauder's Breast Awareness campaign, the brand created “Elizabeth Pink” lipstick named after Elizabeth.
