11 Celebs Doing Something About Blood Cancer!
Every 4 minutes, someone in America is diagnosed with blood cancer. Since stars are "just like us," they are just as affected by the problem as anyone.
Whether they are battling the disease themselves or campaigning on others' behalf, here are 11 celebs that are standing up to blood cancer.
- Michael C. Hall. The “Dexter” actor kept quiet about his fight against Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2010 until his treatment was successful. Michael is a supporter of Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Stand up to Cancer.
- Rihanna. She's 'perfectly good' at supporting the fight against leukemia. In 2010 she teamed up with DKMS Americas and encouraged the African-American community to register for the bone marrow registry (in order to help a little girlbattling the disease).
- Neil Patrick Harris. After his partner lost his mother to Leukemia, the “How I Met your Mother” actor helped out with fundraising for relevant organizations such as Stand Up to Cancer.
- Gene Wilder. The Willy Wonka actor whose joyful songs and quirky personality entered the hearts of children everywhere was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in 1999. He won his fight against cancer in 2000.
- Kenechi Udeze. The NHL star retired from his Vikings football team in 2009 at the age of 26 because of the after-treatment effects of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
- Robert Pattinson. He cannot get enough of blood. During his Teen Choice acceptance speech, Robert gave a shoutout to Cancer Bites, a campaign launching on Halloween 2011 to promote raising awareness around blood cancers.
- Paul Azinger. The pro-golfer was diagnosed with Lymphoma in his right shoulder in 1994. He wrote the book “Ringer” as an attempt to spread awareness and discuss his battle with the disease.
- David Beckham. The sexy British soccer player supported the fight against Leukemia by visiting children with Leukemia at Xinhua Hospital in Shanghai.
- Paul Allen. The co-founder of Microsoft was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2009. However, this isn’t the first time the cancer-free co-founder battled a life threatening disease. In 1983 he was diagnosed with another type of Lymphoma, Hodgkin disease.
- Jason Blake. The Toronto maple Leaf hockey player was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia in 2007 and is currently in remission. Blake has become an advocate for cancer by participating in the Anaheim Duck's Hockey Fights Cancer event.
- Fergie. The singer used her shoe line, Fergie Footwear, to monumental use by donating to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society at LAGLC Women’s Services.
You'd don't need to be a major celeb to take a stand like these guys did. Just sign up for the Give a Spit campaign and help put people in the Be the Match bone marrow donor registry to help save lives.
