Today is 25th edition of Kids Day fundraiser
Thousands of volunteers are selling the special 25th annual Kids Day edition of The Fresno Bee today to raise money for Children's Hospital Central California.
Volunteers started selling the $1 special editions on Valley street corners as early as 5 a.m. Many groups continue sales into the afternoon.
The Kids Day edition features stories about the hospital, published in a special section wrapped around The Bee. It's sold by volunteers in Fresno, Tulare, Madera, Kings, Merced and Mariposa counties.
Volunteers sell from street corners and along the sides of roads; many pre-sell the special edition to co-workers and organizations.
People also can make a one-time $5 donation by texting G-E-O-R-G-E to the number 90999 (standard text messaging rates apply). George the Giraffe is the hospital's mascot.Monday, the hospital announced that it's honoring the 25th anniversary by offering a commemorative T-shirt or coffee mug for a $25 donation. The special offers will be available from Kids Day volunteers on the southwest corner of Blackstone and Shaw avenues in Fresno.
The location, nicknamed "Celebrity Corner," will feature appearances by celebrities including Mayor Ashley Swearengin; new Fresno State football coach Tim DeRuyter; NFL players Richard Marshall, James Sanders and Stephen Spach; Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer; and Fresno Bee columnist Bill McEwen and Opinion Page Editor Jim Boren.
Last year's event raised $440,000. This year's goal is to match that amount, says Tom Cullinan, vice president of circulation for The Bee. The most ever raised was $470,514, in 2008.
The first 24 Kids Day fundraisers have generated more than $5 million for the hospital in Madera County.
Kids Day is sponsored by The Fresno Bee and ABC30.
