Harry Potter Star Wants To Eliminate Seven Tropical Diseases

Harry Potter actor Tom Felton is calling on his fans to join him in the fight to eliminate seven neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) by 2020. As an ambassador for the END7 campaign, Felton is helping to raise public awareness about these devastating diseases of poverty that infect one in six people worldwide, including 500 million children.

It costs just 50 pence to treat and protect one person against all seven major NTDs for an entire year. Pills to treat these diseases are donated by pharmaceutical companies and many programmes use existing infrastructure, such as schools and community centres, to administer the treatments—making NTD treatment one of most cost-effective public health initiatives available today.

“I was inspired to support the END7 campaign when I learned how easy it was for young people to get involved,” said Felton. “By donating just a few pence, anyone can help get these treatments to people who need them most and hopefully change the future for the millions of children growing up in developing countries around the world.”

NTDs cause blindness, massive swelling in appendages and limbs, severe malnutrition and anaemia. These diseases prevent children from growing and learning. They reduce adults’ economic productivity and ability to care for their families, and thus keep families and communities trapped in a cycle of poverty and disease.

The END7 campaign, launched in January 2012 by the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases, an initiative of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, aims to raise the public awareness and funding required to cover the cost of distributing medicine and setting up treatment programmes for NTDs. It is the first comprehensive public awareness campaign dedicated to NTD treatment and elimination and relies heavily on compelling visual content disseminated through various social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to spread its message. Bill Nighy also supports the campaign.

Harry Potter Comes To Bitter Sweet End In 2011
For millions of people all over the world, the approach of midnight on July 15 brought with it a gut-wrenching mix of excitement and heartache. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" was set to open all over the world, and as fans lined up outside movie theaters — some in costume as their favorite character — we realized that this was it. The joy of seeing the final installment of the most successful film franchise in history was tempered with the sadness that we'd never get to do this again. This truly great thing that had been, from first book to final film, a part of our lives for well over a decade had reached its end. For an entire generation, the film's release was like turning the final page on our childhoods.

"Deathly Hallows, Part 2" wasn't just a movie; it was the event of the summer. And the bittersweet moment is also MTV News' #8 Top Newsmaker of 2011, because it made headlines and marked the end of an era.
The stars of the film definitely seemed to understand just how close to fans' hearts the franchise had become. It had, after all, touched them too. Asked if there'd be tears upon the film's release, Emma Watson cheekily told MTV News at the MTV Movie Awards, "Maybe a few. Maybe one or two, just little ones."
The film set box-office records for the biggest first day ($92.1 million) and largest opening weekend, both domestically ($168.5 million) and worldwide ($314 million), ever and received the best reviews of any film in the franchise. The praise wasn't contained to critics and fans: Even the stars of the film were in awe of the final product. "I was a wreck because of the film itself," Daniel Radcliffe told MTV News at the film's New York premiere. "You've got to have a heart of stone to not find part of it — especially Alan Rickman's performance — heartbreaking, so yeah, I've done my fair share of crying already. ... I think that we proved in doing 'Potter' that you can bring integrity and perpetual growth to a franchise."
Fans' devotion to the books, films and characters created by J.K. Rowling was manifest in the enthusiastic response to our "Harry Potter" World Cup, MTV News' month-long, March Madness-style tournament to find out which character was the fan favorite. More than 7.4 million votes were cast in the competition, resulting in a final face-off between Ron Weasley andProfessor Severus Snape. In the end, the compellingly complex Snape took the title, and star Alan Rickman thanked fans at the film's New York premiere, telling MTV News that Snape's victory was "a vote for ambiguity and things where you don't quite know how they're going to turn out." He continued, "Also, it's [Snape's] values that you can't talk about without ruining the film, but things like courage and determination and loyalty and love, actually."
The success of the series itself could be seen as a celebration of those same things. On the surface, the "Harry Potter" films are fantasies about a boy wizard and his underdog friends navigating a magical universe in which evil lurks in the shadows. But above all, the "Potter" books and films champion courage, determination and loyalty in the face of great adversity and are premised on the notion that love ultimately conquers all. We can think of no better message for a film series to impart on a generation of young people facing a real world mired in conflict and economic turmoil.
It's sad that there's no more "Potter" to look forward to, but the magic created by Rowling; directors Chris Columbus, Alfonso CuarĂ³n, Mike Newell and especially David Yates (who helmed the final four films); screenwriter Steven Kloves; and stars Radcliffe, Watson and Rupert Grint will live on to do great things — much like the Boy Who Lived himself.
MTV continues our Best of 2011 coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. As we count down the newsmakers that mattered to you most, also check out our topArtistsSongsLive Performances and EDM Artists of 2011.

Win Harry Potter Star's Jacket In Charity Competition

On the day that the final installment of the blockbuster Harry Potter franchise is released on Blu-ray and DVD, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is launching a competition to win a jacket worn by Oliver Phelps, the film’s George Weasley.

Oliver undertook the Three Peaks Challenge in aid of the RNLI, scaling the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales in June. Now fans of the actor can enter a competition to win the Helly Hansen jacket that he wore taking part in the challenge.

The Barrier Jacket includes commemorative branding which makes it a great piece of memorabilia for fans of Oliver and the Harry Potter films to get their hands on. Entry to the competition costs £3, which will go towards Oliver’s target of raising £1,996 to pay for two RNLI lifeguards to be fully trained and equipped to patrol Fistral beach in Cornwall next season.

RNLI lifeguards provide a seasonal service on 163 UK and Channel Island beaches and in 2010, RNLI lifeguards aided 18,779 people and saved 107 lives. Helly Hansen is an official supplier to the RNLI and provided the technical clothing Oliver needed to complete the challenge.

Entry to the competition is by visiting the RNLI website and completing the following sentence: ‘The RNLI is a unique charity because …’.

Competition entries close on Friday 16 December 2011.

Emma Watson Rumored to Launch Evening Fashion Line

Over the past year, it's become markedly clear that Emma Watson's consistently exceptional sartorial game has made her one of the reigning queens of the red carpet. Armed with her fash-forward pixie cut, she effortlessly rocks every full-volume frock the runway has to offer. She's made a name for herself as a respected brand spokesperson for Burberry and People Tree (a fair-trade label with which she collaborated on three collections). Not to mention, she's kind of a magazine cover regular. And our number one choice for a closet raid.
Lucky for us, it seems Emma's a benevolent ruler. Instead of keeping all the style wisdom to herself, she wants to share the wealth by launching a line of evening wear. Though details are short in supply and information seems slightly unreliable as it comes straight from the Daily Mail, no young "celebrity designer" starlet would be more apt at putting down the scripts and picking up a sewing machine. Not only would her efforts be ethically motivated, but the results would certainly arrive face-meltingly awesome with not a single sequin, gem, or ruffle out of place. Based on her already fine-tuned taste, we make a few predictions for what to expect while this story unfolds.

Harry Potter Scores Biggest Opening Weekend Ever!

Hello, trifecta. After scoring the largest midnight debut and opening day, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 also landed the big one: best opening weekend.
According to studio estimates, the PG-13 wizarding movie collected $168.6 million this weekend, surpassing The Dark Knight‘s record $158.4 million and giving Warner Bros. the two best opening weekends ever. However, when adjusted for inflation, Knight would still be king with approximately $173 million in today’s ticket prices. Nevertheless, everyone involved with the eighth and final Potter film should be mighty proud. Not only did the movie bring in record-breaking amounts of moolah, but it’s currently the best-reviewed wide release of the year, according to both Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes. And it received an overall “A” rating from CinemaScore audiences.
Potter earned a record $15.5 million at IMAX theaters, according to the large-screen company. The film’s conversion to 3-D, however, produced middling results, as just 43 percent of the movie’s debut came from 3-D screens. Transformers: Dark of the Moon, by comparison, harvested 60 percent of its opening from 3-D showings. Overseas, where audiences are still enamored with 3-D, Potter‘s three-dimensional share was a stronger 61 percent. Speaking of overseas, Potter grossed $307 million in 59 countries, surpassing Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides‘ $260.4 million for the largest foreign opening of all time. Add in its domestic total and Potter’s worldwide debut becomes $475.6 million, trouncing the prior all-time benchmark of $394 million set by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
