Amelia's Book Room: Hoot

I gotta say, I have owls on the brain right now. And so does Roy Eberheart in Carl Hiaasen's novel Hoot.

Roy just moved to Coconut Cove, Florida, from Montana, so he's feeling a little out of place. The school bully, Dana Matherson, happens to have an unbridled hatred for him. And there's a mysterious boy who he often sees running barefoot past the school bus. When Beatrice Leep confronts him in the cafeteria and tells him to give up looking for the boy, he knows something's up.

I don't want to give away too much about the plot, although you've probably heard about the book, and the movie adapted from it, starring Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson, anyone?). Eventually, Roy discovers that the construction site of a future pancake house is the home of a colony of burrowing owls, and that their habitat will be destroyed. Roy and his friends are prepared to do anything to save these threatened and adorable birds.

This is a great book for anyone interested in environment conservation and saving wildlife! It's a fun story, and very enjoyable. You might also like Hiaasen's second book for young people, Flush.

Have a good week, and happy reading!
