The Central California Children's Institute at California State University, Fresno will be able help families with underdeveloped children thanks to a $450,000 grant that will implement a three-year training project.
The grant, from the Central Valley Regional Center Inc., will have the institute training childhood mental health curricula to 320 practitioners of six to seven public agencies in Fresno, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Kings and Tulare counties.
The agencies will then be able to better help families with children who have developmental disabilities based on their specific needs.
A training council, consisting of the county offices of education, departments of behavioral health and social services, regional centers and children's services networks, will plan the program, which will then kick off in fall 2012.
From that point on, another two years will be devoted to 12 large lecture-style training sessions and other teaching methods that conform to each agency's needs and practices.
Funding for the Foundations of Infant Family Mental Health Training Project comes from the California Mental Health Services Act passed by voters in 2004 to expand county mental health service systems in the state. Additional funds and training will come from First 5 Fresno County.
