One Direction To Get A Load Of Love Songs From Ed Sheeran
One Direction have once again enlisted the help of Ed Sheeran for their still-in-the-works sophomore album.
The British singer/songwriter got a writing credit on 1D's debut, Up All Night, and Sheeran assured us that the boy band has no plans to deviate from singing the love songs that have made them famous on both sides of the pond.
"I wrote the three tracks that I gave [them] ... when I was 17 and they were on my hard drive for a long time," he revealed to MTV News when we caught up with him on Tuesday right before he took the stage at Irving Plaza in New York City. "And then I gave them one song for their last album, and they came back and said, 'Do you have any more?' and I said, 'Here's a whole load. Take your pick.' "While the 21-year-old wasn't necessarily offering up brand-new songs forOne Direction's next album, the tracks definitely reflect the kind of subject matter — the joys of young love, for example — that keep Directioners singing along.
"Seventeen-year-old Ed just wrote a lot of love songs, so expect to hear a lot of love songs on their album, I guess," Sheeran explained, adding that fans won't find much about heartbreak though. "I had a wicked girlfriend at 17. ... She was great. Actually [my] + album is pretty much about her," he went on to reveal. "So she spawned off a lot of songs."
Although Sheeran tends to make acoustic folk music, he told us he likes to try on different musical hats, including Top 40 pop.
"I quite like straddling both sides of the industry," he said. "Like, to be able to release an album on my own, which is kind of like an acoustic soul album, and then do a four-track EP with an act like Yelawolf and then write a song for One Direction. I quite like having lots of different fingers in lots of different pies and not really being able to put in a category or a box. I like trying out new things and staying musically driven."
