Alanna wants nothing more than to be a knight, a warrior-- but she is, quite plainly, a girl. Her twin brother, Thom, is being forced into knighthood, when he would prefer to learn sorcery. And then, they find the answer: switch places.
Alanna cuts off her hair and dresses in boys' clothes; they trick their guides into believing they're brothers, and Thom goes off to sorcery school, and Alanna, or, 'Alan,' is sent to become a page.
It's difficult pretending to be a boy, though. Alanna must hide her identity from even her closest friends, even the Prince of Tortall. Bullied by Ralon of Malven, pushed by her trainers, and keeping her secret under check, being a female page is a full-time job!
Tamora Pierce has written many amazing series', including several within the Tortallan universe, such as Protector Of The Small, about Keladry, a Tortallan girl following in Alanna's footsteps, and Daughter Of The Lioness, telling the story of Alanna's daughter, Alianne.
The Song Of The Lioness quartet begins with Alanna: The First Adventure, and continues in In The Hand Of The Goddess.
