Sorry, all, I wrote this column yesterday, only to forget to post it. (Smacks self on head.) Happy Friday, by the way.
Today, I was looking through a wonderful book that I got for my birthday. It's called Random House Word Menu, by Stephen Glazier. It's a reference book that organizes language by subject matter. Therefore, I could look under Clothing, and find nearly every word related to clothing that I would ever want to know.
For the first time in while here in Kansas, the gray clouds parted and revealed a blue sky. I looked up Colors in the Word Menu.
Thirty listings under Gray and fifty-six listings under Blue. Here are my five favorites from each:
Gray
ash
battleship
obsidian
plumbago
smoke
Blue
azure
gentian
indigo
smalt
zaffer
Just seeing these words, forming them silently with my lips, makes me appreciate our vast language.
My point, I suppose, is that you should really check out this book, whether you're a word lover or not. You might not be allowed to literally check it out from a library, since it's a gigantic reference book, but you could at least go and immerse yourself in it for a little while – or find it on Amazon.
