Amelia's Book Room: Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress

Last week, I promised something that guys would like too, and despite the dainty red shoes on the cover of Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress (not to mention the title), I assure you that you boys will enjoy it!

Dai Sijie's historical novel is about two Chinese teenagers, Luo and our unnamed narrator. This story chronicles their experience in Chairman Mao's Cultural Revolution, and being "re-educated" in a rural village on Pheonix Mountain. During this time, many things that we take for granted were forbidden. When the boys and their uneducated mountain seamstress come upon a bounty of books, French stories of adventure and drama, they are instantly enchanted.

This book is a bit more mature than the ones I usually recommend, but most of you guys can handle it, right? Oh, and don't worry, both boys and girls will enjoy this, I certainly did! Author Dai Sijie, a filmmaker, went through re-education himself. He directed and wrote the movie version of the book.

Don't forget to leave me a comment, and join the book club; we're reading The Wizard Of Oz!
