This first novel in the Redwall series took me a long while to finish, but it was definitely worth it! I rarely take much interest in animal novels these days; this and the classic Watership Down are some of the few I've really liked. In Brian Jacques' novel Redwall we come upon the Redwall Abbey, inhabited by mice--monks, to be exact. We meet Matthias, a timid young monk, who aspires to be more. And he just may get his chance, because trouble is coming down the road--literally!
On his way to terrorize and attack anyone in his way is the terrible rat Cluny the Scourge, leading his army. He has his cold heart set on taking the Abbey, and all woodland animals living in the surrounding forest.
Now, this sounds like an action-packed adventure, and it is! But there's also a ton of feasting going on here, and I'm talking about those descriptive meals that make your mouth water, even if it is mice eating them!
