‘Giuliana & Bill’ Recap: Giuliana Learns She Has Breast Cancer

Giuliana Bill Cancer

In the emotional season five premiere, Giuliana finds out she has breast cancer, and breaks the devastating news to her family and the public — with Bill by her side every step of the way.

When we last left Giuliana Rancic and hubby Bill Rancic at the end of season four of Giuliana & Bill, their adventure-filled “year of fun” was winding down, and they were getting serious about starting yet another round of in vitro fertilization. But in the season five premiere, the couple gets hit with a shocking new hurdle they never expected in their journey to becoming parents.

At the start of the April 3 episode, Giuliana and Bill see a new doctor who encourages Giuliana to get a routine mammogram, just as a precaution. She undergoes the routine test even though, at 36, she’s still years away from the age doctors typically recommend women get one for the first time. And then, the worst happens — Giuliana’s doctor tells her she has cancer.

Both Giuliana and Bill share the news with only their parents, and throw themselves into work, which they both say is a welcome distraction at such a difficult time. Giuliana manages to keep a smile on her face while reporting from New York fashion week and then the Emmy’s back-to-back, while Bill carries on with business plans for their new Chicago restaurant. They even sneak in a romantic carriage ride in New York City — complete with champagne! — to try and keep things light.

In a particularly hard-to-watch moment, Giuliana doesn’t realize until it’s too late that her strapless red gown for the Emmy’s doesn’t fit right in the bust and she keeps having to pull it up while interviewing actors on the red carpet. That minor wardrobe malfunction, which would otherwise not have been a big deal, becomes the moment when Giuliana says she was “angry” at her body and felt bad about it for the first time in her life.

On the heels of that emotional ordeal, Giuliana refuses to cancel her scheduled appearance on theToday show, and goes the morning show to reveal the breast cancer secret she and Bill had kept to themselves for months.

“I wanted to tell women that even if something like this happens to you, you can still be strong,” she says. “If you find it early, you’ll be okay.”

Bill is right there with Giuliana through her first surgery — a double lymphectomy — and even makes her laugh in the hospital room. The very next week, she returns to work at E! News.

Through it all, Giuliana handles opening up about her struggle with such grace, and Bill remains always positive and upbeat.

What do YOU think, HollywoodLifers? Do you admire Giuliana’s bravery after finding out she has breast cancer?
