Life After College-My Favorite Question

Hello everyone!!

This week's blog is going to be short, but sweet. I'm currently in the middle of studying for an essay test in my Ancient Novel class. What is that? It's a class where we read Greek novels....which for me, are rather confusing and difficult to regurgitate...

with that being said, I wanted to briefly discuss my favorite question of all time. I want you all to be prepared for this question, because I'm sure if you're in college or thinking about college, you're going to get this ALL THE TIME:

Are you ready for it?!?!

Here it is:
"What are you going to do with your degree"?
also disguised as "what are you going to do with your life"?
a.k.a. "What is that, and what kind of job will that get you"?

I get this question a lot. I tried to write it off because quite a few people that ask that question don't really know what Anthropology is or the different fields you can specialize in within the degree. However, I've come to realize that it has nothing to do with your degree, it's just a question we ask each other. Born out of natural curiosity, we all like to know where people are going in their lives, their goals, their hopes and dreams....

But when we ask the question ourselves, I think we fail to remember how difficult answering that question is.

I think we all have moments where we're about 99.9% sure of what we want to do. When we're little we want to be the coolest thing possible, and as we get older we find out that we're not good at chemistry or physics, and so we find other dreams that are just as cool, but in a different way.
Then you get into college and actually do those things....and find out they might not be so cool. Kudos to those who actually do stick with their childhood dreams, because I think if you're motivated enough then you can completely follow through. Myself, on the other hand, well I've changed my mind probably 15 times since I was little.

I still don't know how to answer this question, so I try to focus on the immediate future. Right now, I have a job, which with the economy being what it is I am thankful for. Right now in my life, it's hard to look much further than that. Sure, I'd like to travel and possibly go to grad school and work towards a cause that is bigger than myself, but for the immediate future, the best way to answer that question is "I am going to enjoy whatever comes my way in life". Simple as that, nothing to do with my degree, nothing fancy....just LIVE LIFE!

So, prepare yourself....I think you'll all be answering that question perhaps for most of your adult life, but it doesn't have to freak you out and make you feel pressured to have a plan. While I know people expect an answer, I think if they stopped to think about it themselves they wouldn't always have the big life affirming answer they expect out of you. Just enjoy it, and take it one day at a time. Do SOME planning, but remember that nobody expects you to have a year by year plan for your life and to follow it to a T.

Have a great week everybody!

P.S. Remember, tomorrow April 22nd is EARTH DAY!!! Please do something, no matter how small, to celebrate this wonderful planet that we have!! Plant a tree, donate to an Earthly cause, volunteer!!!

I'm a history major. The question I get from everyone when I tell them that is "oh. So you're going to teach?" It's annoying! Just because I major in a core subject field doesn't mean that's the only thing I can do with my degree. I like the way you put it. Right now, I have goals, but I'm just living life one day at a time and taking whatever comes my way. :)

"Live life" is definitely a good saying, in my opinion :) Love the column, Stephanie!
