Desperate Times = Desperate Fashion?

Do desperate financial times call for desperate fashion? Of course not!
In fact, it leads to a more fantasy and escapist opportunity. In these bleak times of economic struggle, who wouldn't want to indulge and feel fabulous?! A major trend on the Spring 2009 runways was referred to as Depression Chic, a partial throwback to the Great Depression in 1929. Designers redid the flapper, vibrant yet minimal sac dresses, and returned to the West. Photos courtesy of style.com.

Never lose hope during these economic struggles!

The First Lady of Fashion

Hello, everyone! I'm here for a Style Injections update, one that is terribly late due to an overload in school and sports. Sorry! :(

Yesterday, as every person in this country (and world) should know, was President Barack Obama's Inauguration. Many reporters have been speculating on what his wife and current-First Lady, Michelle, would wear ... and she did not disappoint! Her confidence in bold ensembles by up-and-coming designers is truly establishing Mrs. Obama as a chic icon and inspiration.

For the swearing-in ceremony Tuesday morning and afternoon, the First Lady chose a cremy yellow dress by Cuban designer Isabel Toledo. The glamorous dress and matching overcoat were made of satin-backed wool guipure, a kind of lace used most often in French haute couture. She accessorized the look with a sparkling crystal necklace and green leather gloves and shoes. The yellow symbolizes optimism for the new times and era her husband will bring!

For the Inaugural balls that evening, Obama chose a beautiful white gown by Taipaei-born designer Jason Wu. It was bedazzled by swarvoski crystals and inspired by the 1950's elegance and romance. The white is speculated to mean a pure beginning, almost a rebirth for the country.

What do you all think of Michelle Obama's ensembles? I was thrilled yesterday to witness a pivotal moment in history. I'm faithful in what President Obama can do for the United States. Have a great week!

Peace & love,

Nicole.

Jump for Pumps!

I have an affinity for pumps; the higher the heel, the better! My personal opinion is that black shoes lengthen the leg most and look the most fierce. It's easy to search online for endless styles and any price range, though it's best to try the shoe on and walk around a bit; high-heeled shoes tend to run (no pun intended, ha!) narrower. You definitely want to find a shoe that you won't be aching to take off in an hour! So find some pumps, strut your stuff, and enjoy being taller than all of your friends ;)
Report 'Newbury': black patent, platform slingback -- $111.00, bluefly.com

Satin Ruffle Heel: black, ruffle detail, 4" heel -- $24.50, wetseal.com

Lance Flex Point: black patent, pointed toe, 3.5" heel -- $20.00, payless.com
Kardin dress pump: black faux suede, 3" heel -- $12.00, payless.com
That's me in the picture below in these heels, they're incredible! They really dress up an outfit, and were originally $24.00. I'd say it's a great deal :)

A Fashionable Thank You

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving; a time to reflect on how far our nation has come, a time to spend with families, and a time to pack in the turkey and pumpkin pie! It's also an opportunity to realize what we are most thankful for in our lives. I'd like to share with you the top five fashion trends and styles I give thanks to:
1. Straight leg jeans: Not as restrictive as the skinny, and not as casual as a flare. There's enough room to run around without being too snug and transition great from day to night. My black striaght cut jeans from American Eagle are the the most comfortable pair I own.
2. Double-breasted Pea Coats: Wool ones especially, and preferably with a belt. They're sophisticated and keep you warm (in most cases). It's relatively easy to buy a pea coat within any price range. I bought a black one last year at Wet Seal for $35. 3. Oxford Shoes: Menswear and nerdy, but oh-so-chic. The bootie style is most current with today's trends. Stiletto heels are fabulous, but a thicker heel is much more practical and your heels will thank you.

4. Jewel Tones: I know they're associated with Spring '08, but I find jewel tones so elegant for winter! Dresses, blouses, purses and jewels themselves look very sharp amid gray and black. Be sure to balance what you're wearing because the hues are very rich. 5. Innovation: Nicolas Ghesquiere (for Balenciaga), Alexander McQueen, John Galliano (for Dior & his namesake line), Gareth Pugh -- how inspiring! Their designs may not be conventional enough for the real world (which generates many spin-offs), but you have to appreciate the imagination and handiwork that goes into what they make. Their runways never bore, always edgy and unprecedented.
below: Alex Mc-Q fall/winter 2009, Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere spring/summer 2007, Dior by John Galliano spring/summer 2008, and Gareth Pugh fall/winter 2009.

This is what I appreciate most in the fashion world. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday with their family ... Happy Thanksgiving!
xoxo; nicole.

Winter's - A - Comin'

Dolce & Gabbana Winter 2008 -- 2009
Let this inspire you! It certainly does for me :)
Old country, aristocratic elegance.
To stay warm, refer to flannel and wool but try to stay away from bulky layers.
Plaid and tartans are outstanding patterns. If you're daring and want to combine them in one outfit, try to have a similar color palette. Boots are a great investment to consider as well. A sturdy leather number at knee-length are wonderful with jeans or a dress. Sorry, I'm not a big fan of the Ugg boot :\ ! Hope you stay warm in this pre-winter season, and remember: quality over quantity!
