Mariposa's Connections: How Do You Know?

So how do you know if you love someone? Is it the butterflies in the stomach, or the smile he or she always brings to life on your face? Or is that just an emotion - a feeling that flies by quickly - rather than the real thing? It's so hard to tell - ask an adult, and he'll probably say, "You just know." But how do you just know?

I think that we know we love someone, not when we have him (or her) unconditionally, but when there's a chance of losing him. When we get that empty dull feeling inside as we realize we can't stand the future without that person, or when we realize that we couldn't bear seeing that person hurt, especially by ourselves. When we'd sacrifice for them, or give of ourselves just to make them happy. That's how we know - when we realize that they might be leaving, and taking our hearts with them.
