Amelia's Book Room: The Witch Of Blackbird Pond

This week, we're going to go back in time a ways; back to 1687, and the story of 16-year-old Katherine Tyler. (It seems like the last few books I've reviewed involve a 16-year-old...) After a carefree and wealthy life in Barbados, Kit (as she is nicknamed) has no other choice but to leave her home and live with her aunt and uncle in Connecticut. Before she even reaches the Puritan community of Wethersfield, however, she begins to unwillingly stir trouble; while traveling by boat, she dives into the river after a child's toy, and raises suspicions: she discovers that where she is going, swimming is not a preferable skill for young women.

While some people on the ship already suspect she is a witch, things on shore are not much better. Her cousins, Judith and Mercy, are shocked at her apparel; beautiful dresses and fanciful things, not a single dress fit for working in, while they themselves only own one or two simple dresses. Kit is also not used to the tasks and chores they must perform each day, because back at home, they had slaves to do them.

I'll admit, I'm not quite finished with The Witch Of Blackbird Pond yet, but it won a Newbery Medal, so it's gotta be pretty good all the way through, right? I am really enjoying it so far, though. Definitely a classic must-read! You can find out more about author Elizabeth George Speare right here.

Happy reading, everyone! Y'all are probably going on spring break around this time--what are you going to be reading during your time off? Share!
